Our Food for Thought Conference brings market managers, farmers, municipalities, agricultural businesses, educators, healthcare professionals, food advocates and local food enthusiasts together to share their experience, knowledge and passion for healthy food, strong communities and food sovereignty.

The Food for Thought Conference is an interactive, two-day conference that will propel the vision for your agriculture business forward. It is designed to equip and empower those in the sustainable agriculture community through a host of workshops and demonstrations.

2017 Black Farmers & Urban Gardeners Conference

Black Urban Growers (BUGs) announces 7th Annual Black Farmers & Urban Gardeners National Conference to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, November 10–12, 2017.

Since 2010 they have been creating a space for black urban and rural farmers, food justice activists, chefs, educators, policy makers and everyday citizens to come together and share innovative ideas, projects, and best practices for reclaiming and reshaping our food system.

2017 BUGS Conference Theme Tracks:

Rooted -  Asks us to dig deep and ground ourselves in the wisdom and knowledge of our ancestors, to create a space of honor and shared value for our ancestors and their traditions. We invite you to share beliefs, values and best practices from our elders.

Rising (In) - Calls for current food systems strategies that empower, liberate, connect, and re-form bonds that define our communities. We invite proposals that speak to these lessons as well as symbiotic relationships and the many ways we form bonds with the land (SOILdarity), with each other, and across geographies. land and land seeker, beginning and seasoned growers, the urban with the rural.

Reimagine - Inspired by Afro-Futurism and Abolition, we invite proposals that imagine our liberated future selves, and environments as we relate to and curate our African diasporic foodways and the future of Black farming.

Re-Construction - Although we always encourage interactive workshops we also offer a specific skillshare track that allows for work on the land, and other hands-on urban and rural agriculture education workshops:

  •     Building Self-Reliant Communities
  •     Health and Well-Being
  •     Farmer-to-Farmer
  •     Food Policy and Action Planning
  •     From Seed to Table
  •     Skill-building workshops on Sustainable Agriculturei.e. hoop house construction, hydroponics, aquaponics

CropMob at Rodgers Greens & Roots

Howdy Mobbers!
We have a great mob for you this month. Rodgers Greens and Roots is a beautiful 64 acre farm in Chattahooche hill country, and farmer Ashley Rodgers is doing amazing work. This would be a great first time mob, feel free to bring friends and family! Chef Thomas McKeown will be prepparing lunch for everyone using veggies from the farm. Some of the work will include:

-taking down tomatoes
-breaking up garlic for planting
-helping plant on the waterwheel
-weeding
-orchard clean up and irrigation installation

Let's pull together and help Ashley get ready for a strong fall season.

As always, don't forget the standard farming volunteer essentials: Hat, sunscreen, bug spray, water bottle, gloves, plate and utensils. Wear comfy and closed-toed shoes!

May Mega Mob At Gilliam's Garden

Greetings Mobbers! We have another great in-town farm lined up for you to volunteer at this month! Gilliams Gardens is an educational community-centered farm located in Oakland City in Southwest Atlanta. Farmer P and Lovie have a long list of farm tasks to get accomplished, let's show up in force and do some good work!

Tasks:

- Assemble raised beds
- Secure chicken coop
- Paint signs
- Weed high tunnel
- Prep duck pond

This is a great event for new mobbers and families, so reach out and challenge your friends to join you.

A delicious, gourmet lunch featuring local produce will be graciously provided by the amazing staff at The Wrecking Bar.

As always, don't forget the standard farming volunteer essentials: Hat, sunscreen, bug spray, water bottle, gloves, plate and utensils.

Strawberries and Weeds at Woodland Gardens!

Get ready for a great mob! For Earth Day Weekend, we are traveling to Athens to help out at one of the most beautiful organic farms in the state. Woodland Gardens has been producing delicious food for Atlanta and Athens for 17 years and it is in the middle of spring's bounty. They need your help weeding strawberries, harvesting flowers, clearing fields and mulching blueberries. If that wasn't enough to entice you, Peter Dale from The National will be providing a delicious lunch from farm ingredients. Not to be missed! This is a great first time/family mob, so invite your friends and get ready for a great Sunday!

Crop Mob for FreeWheel Farm

Mobbers - we have some very exciting news! We've decided to partner with The Farmer Fund to ensure our local farmers get the help they need and that the fun times of Crop Mob continue! Pretty exciting stuff, huh?

So to get this party started, we'll be doing things just a little differently with a weekday evening mob at Freewheel Farm! Don't worry - it's in town, and we're happy for folks to join in whenever your work schedule and traffic allows.

Join us for some mulching, weeding, and good times followed by bonfire and beers. Sandwiches and sides featuring Freewheel's produce will be providing courtesy of the awesome Candler Park Market! Can't wait to see you there!
